Heart Kids
At HeartKids Qld we strive to offer support, encouragement and hope to families of children with Heart Disease. We raise awareness and vital funding into the causes of this chronic disease. HeartKids Qld Inc is a not-for-profit, charitable organisation, committed to enhancing the lives of children born with Congenital Heart Disease/Defects (CHD) & their families
While for many families of these children the future is clouded with uncertainty, our goal is to secure the futures of our very special kids. We are also seeking to gain greater public awareness and support for our cause so that we can make a real difference.
In 80% of cases the cause of Congenital Heart Disease is unknown. We have recently partnered with leading cardiologists and researchers with the aim of providing them with financial support to assist with research and management of children with heart disease. Only with research into the cause can we improve the outcomes for heart children
We support our families through our Family Support Program at the Mater Children’s Hospital which includes providing meals for parents when their children are admitted to hospital. Many Heart children require multiple surgeries and lengthy hospital stays. CHD is the number one reason that children are admitted to intensive care..
HeartKids Qld is the only support group in Qld that represents the interests of these precious children who we call “HeartKids” ..
Over 70 per cent of our heart families are from regional and remote Queensland who often have to travel to Brisbane for treatment.
With the advances in medical technology, heart children can now survive into their teens and beyond. This is a growing population of people needing ongoing chronic healthcare management.. HeartKids Qld regularly funds new and vital medical equipment.

Glaucoma Australia
‘Don’t Lose Sight of Your Family’
Glaucoma is a worldwide epidemiological challenge affecting approximately four per cent of the global population with an estimated 50 per cent of glaucoma cases remaining undiagnosed. World Glaucoma Week is a joint initiative by the World Glaucoma Association (WGA) and World Glaucoma Patient Association (WGPA) designed to promote awareness of eye health and the importance of regular eye examinations to reduce the onset of glaucoma. There are generally no warning signs therefore glaucoma is often referred to as the ‘sneak thief of sight’.
‘Don’t lose sight of your family’
The theme of World Glaucoma Week this year was chosen because of its clever play on words: untreated glaucoma damages sight, making the sufferer unable to see his/her beloved family members. It also reminds glaucoma patients under treatment to tell their blood relatives that with a parent with glaucoma, one’s risk of developing glaucoma one’s self is increased about 5 times, and with a sibling with glaucoma, that risk increases about 9 times.
In Australia
In Australia, glaucoma is a major cause of sight loss in adults over the age of 40. It is estimated that 300,000 have glaucoma, half being unaware they have the condition. Due to an increase in the ageing population, glaucoma is increasing, leading to an increased economic burden on society
Australians will be encouraged during the campaign to undertake a comprehensive eye check as early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are paramount in saving vision from glaucoma.
At greatest risk of glaucoma are those who are: 40 years and over; have a family history of glaucoma; suffer with diabetes or migraine; are long or short sighted; have sustained a previous eye injury; have diagnosed high or low blood pressure or who have a history of prolonged use of cortisone (steroids)
Glaucoma Australia is the peak glaucoma awareness/education/support association in Australia. It is a national, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing educational services to raise awareness about this serious and common eye disease glaucoma; to support glaucoma sufferers and to raise fund for research.
If pharmacies wish to prompt World Glaucoma Week please contact Glaucoma Australia. They can supply you with glaucoma brochures and posters. Their details are: telephone number 1800 500 880, email: glaucoma@glaucoma.org.au or visit their web site at: www.glaucoma.org.au

Crime Prevention
Crime Prevention covers a multitude of areas from security in the home, security for seniors, motor vehicle security, personal security, property identification to name a few. Education is the key. If you educate persons and they become more aware of say home security they will upgrade their security accordingly – by upgrading security then that may be sufficient to either deter to prevent an offender from breaking into the premises.
Crime prevention is exactly that it is all about preventing incidents occurring instead of having to react to an incident which has occurred.
